The court postponed the case against Carlos Higuera until 14 December.

Magistrate Albertus Roux ordered that Higuera would be referred to Sterkfontein psychiatric hospital for further observation but didn’t confirm an exact date.

Earlier Higuera’s father, George Higuera, handed in medical documents to prove that his son was on medication for schizophrenia.

Roux ruled that the documents were evidence enough that Higuera needed to be referred to an institution.

The State prosecutor told the court that such cases were given priority and hopefully a bed would be available in a month’s time as there was a waiting list of about 165 people.

Higuera will remain in custody in the hospital section of the prison.

Higuera is accused of stabbing Chumisa Nqakula to death last month in Bezuidenhout Valley in Johannesburg.

Chumisa was the son of Nosiviwe and Charles Nqakula, himself a former minister of defence and currently South Africa’s high commissioner to Mozambique. - ANA
