According to the South African Weather Service, the province is currently in the throes of the El Niño Southern Oscillation.

This could lead to above-normal rainfall.

The latest weather forecast has predicted the possibility of severe thunderstorms, mainly over the southern parts of Gauteng.

Large amounts of small hail, heavy downpours, and damaging winds can be expected.

The disaster centre’s Tshepo Motlhale says these weather conditions could lead to flooding in low-lying areas, informal settlements, roads and bridges.

"Motorists are advised to avoid flooded roads and swollen streams where rising water levels are observed. Residents are further advised to move to higher grounds during flooding and to avoid seeking shelter under trees and tall objects.

“With the holiday season in mind specifically, holidaymakers and residents are cautioned against going fishing or playing golf during thunderstorms. Golf clubs and fishing rods are good conductors of electricity and therefore a risk factor to be considered.”
