Cele: 253 cops have Covid-19

Police Minister Bheki Cele has told MPs that there are 253 confirmed cases of coronavirus among police officers.

Cele was providing feedback on police work in a video call to Parliament on Friday.
He said the Western Cape has the highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases with 178, followed by the Eastern Cape with 13 and Gauteng with 12.
The minister confirmed that family members of the officers who test positive are also screened and tested.

"Where members show symptoms of Covid-19 testing is done immediately and members are placed in quarantine.
"Confirmed positive cases and their families and their contacts get referred to the screening and testing and ultimately get quarantined or isolated depending on their results.”
Cele said in addition the relevant police station is also decontaminated.
"Where there is members that were in direct contact with positive members get tested and quarantined immediately.
"This is followed by the decontamination of the workplaces."
