Cele visited the Mtwa’s family in Mthatha on Thursday, accompanied by national police commissioner Fannie Masemola and the provincial police leadership.

The visit followed hot on the heels of a march by community members angered by the lack of police action around the issue of gender-based violence.

The 35-year-old OR Tambo district municipality employee was shot nine times on her driveway last month.

Her sister posted photos on social media of Namhla with bruises on her face and body, claiming she was in an abusive relationship.

However, the minister declined to comment on whether her ex-boyfriend, known as 'Major Bhekizulu', is considered a suspect.

"I cannot give the exact date of the arrest, but we are definitely on solid ground, and it will not take too long for the police to act,” Cele said.

“Police are working around the clock to find the killer of Namhla and they will have to find him first before the community. We are not driven by social media, we are driven by facts.

“Police should move faster so that there is no further damage that could be done by whoever is suspected. You might find out that it is not just one person involved in the crime."

But family spokesperson Siyabonga Mtwa questioned the reason for the sudden visit by the police top brass, which came a month after the killing of her sister.
