A champion cyclist is in the intensive care unit of a Durban hospital after being stabbed and robbed of his bicycle, the Mercury newspaper reported on Tuesday.
According to the report 59-year old Vaughan Cronje was attacked in the leafy upmarket Westville suburb on Sunday night after stopping to attend to a troublesome tyre.
Cronje, who was the world champion in his age group in 1992, sustained a host of injuries, including a punctured lung.
His daughter Michelle Mitchell told the newspaper her father would no longer be able to take part in the Amateur World Road Cycling Championships to be held in Slovenia next month.
Cronje is recovering in hospital.
