The trial of two men accused of plotting the murder of Pretoria mother Chanelle Henning continues in the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday.
On Monday, the court heard testimony from a debt collector, Edward Owens, a friend of one of the accused former Nigerian Olympic athlete Ambrose Monye. Owens said he and Monye had been close friends for over a decade and that Monye used to refer to him as his "fat father" and sometimes helped him collect debts. He testified that Monye had no problem talking to the police when he found out they wanted to question him in connection with the Henning murder.
Monye and his co-accused Andre Gouws have pleaded not guilty to five charges relating to an alleged conspiracy to murder Henning, who was gunned down near her son's creche on November 8, 2011. Henning's self-confessed killers, Gerhardus du Plessis and former policeman Willem (Pike) Pieterse, previously testified that Monye and Gouws planned the murder and got them to do the dirty work. Du Plessis, who admitted to pulling the trigger, and Pieterse, are both serving 18-year prison terms following a plea bargain agreement with the State.
