According to a group of students, the violence broke out after security manhandled some of them.

"Things got out of control when rubber bullets were fired at students. The students retaliated by setting dustbins and billboards alight," one of the students told Jacaranda FM News.

According to reports two students were injured during the protest that started after electricity supply to the Turfloop campus was cut off.

Another student said the electricity was switched off early yesterday morning which resulted in a peaceful protest taking a turn for the worse.

"It started in the morning. They switched off electricity so we had no hot water or lights. There were no street lights and it was dark in the rooms of the residences," the student told Jacaranda FM News.

There has been no official response from the university on the possible suspension of classes. One student said that even if university management decides to resume with lectures, it won't be possible.

"Some students were busy writing exams and as a result of the protests, they weren't able to study," the student said.
