Charlotte Maxeke casualty unit opens its doors again
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The casualty unit at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital is up and running again, Health Minister Joe Phaahla announced on Monday.

Fifteen patients were transferred to the facility by the end of last month.
Phaahla said the unit became operational at the end of April.
"The first group of patients moved in on 4 May 2022, mostly from Helen Joseph Hospital Emergency Department, and as of today the total number of 15 patients has been transferred. They are also mental health or psychiatry patients who were awaiting admission.
"It is important that we emphasise that the opening of the accident and emergency unit is being done in a phased-in approach so as to not overwhelm the system."

It's been over a year since parts of the hospital were gutted by a fire.
The cause of the fire, which has left government with a repair bill running into the millions, has not yet been established.
The units that are expected to come into operation next year include obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatrics, surgery and internal medicine.
Phaahla vowed that all the units would be fully operational by November next year.
