Chief Justice to swear in MPs

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng is expected to administer the oath of office to the National Assembly's 400 newly elected MPs on Wednesday.

"The chief justice of the Republic of South Africa, Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, will in terms of... the Constitution... preside over the first sitting of the fifth democratic Parliament... in Cape Town on Wednesday... and the National Council of Provinces on Thursday," a spokeswoman for the judiciary said in a statement.
 
At the first sitting of the National Assembly at 10.30am on Wednesday, Mogoeng would administer the oath or solemn affirmation to MPs and preside over the election of the Speaker.
 
The first sittings of provincial legislatures would take place simultaneously.
 
Mogoeng had designated judges president and a Northern Cape senior judge to preside over the swearing in ceremonies in the various legislatures.
