The City of Johannesburg this week denied claims that the board had been dissolved, saying the boards operates on an annual basis and that new representatives were elected at the Annual General Meeting.

Allegations of corruption has been levelled against Chikane and his wife, which he has strongly denied.

Chikane says the board has a problem with allegations that they were corrupt.

"We are not fighting with the shareholder (Mashaba) about the decision made. He's got the right to make it," said Chikane.

"The problem for me is when that retirement of the board is associated with refusal to deal with corruption. That is where I have a problem. You can retire a board, but the fact that we could not suspend the Managing Director in terms of the law does not mean we are not against corruption," says Chikane.

Chikane said he feels sorry for former Johannesburg MMC of Infrastructure Anthony Still, who was fired due to a "difference of opinion on the approach to tackling matters of investigations into alleged fraud and corruption within City Power".

Chikane says Still wrote to them, saying he understood why the Managing Director was not fired.

"Unfortunately he lost his job. I sympathise with him. His only sin is that he understood what we were talking about," said Chikane.

"I am of the view that somehow, some people convinced the shareholder that there is corruption at City Power. There is corruption at City Power, help us to deal with it. But for me to suspend the MD, you give me evidence," added Chikane.
