Three people were killed when their vehicle overturned on R23 between Balfour and Heidelberg in Mpumalanga on Sunday.
Two more people sustained serious injuries.
Mpumalanga Community Safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi says the victims included two adults and a child.
"They were first stabilised on the scene before being rushed to the nearby hospitals. They were declared dead at the scene by the paramedics. The cause of the crash is still not known at the moment. However, the investigation is already underway."
Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety Security Vusi Shongwe has urged motorists to obey the rules of the road.
"We need to turn the situation around on our roads to curb needless loss of life. We cannot continue to lose lives like this as a result of crashes. Motorists must play their part by obeying the rules and tolerating each other."
