Child support grant labelled as a life line
A new report has described the child support grant as nothing less than a life line for many South Africans.
The 2016 Child Gauge was unveiled yesterday and looks at the effects of the grant on South African children over the past 18 years.
The value of the child support grant is still too low to cover children's basic nutritional needs, according to the report.
Established in 1998, the child support grant is recognized as one of SA's most successful poverty alleviation strategies with more than 12 million children that have access to the grant.
Senior researcher Ailinn Delany says while the child grant has its benefits, it is still not enough cover children's basic nutritional needs.

"The value of the grant is R360 per month and is not relative to children's basic needs. It is the equivalent of R12 per day," she said.
UNICEF's Yulia Privalova says the child support grant gives SA children a chance at a brighter future.
"This is an investment which other countries in the region in the world are learning - and I think have a lot to learn," she said.
