The Chief Executive Officer at the Nelson Mandela Fund, Sibongile Mkhabela, said Mandela spent a lot of his time trying to ensure a better life for the country's children.
"He devoted his time to children's causes. So it hurts that today our children are hurting as much as they are.
"Today is a celebration that is mixed with a bit of sadness and bitterness as how we have done as South Africa when it comes to our children," said Mkhabela.
