Citrusdal, Vredendal cut off by Western Cape floods

Gift of the Givers spokesperson Ali Sablay says the flood-hit towns of Citrusdal and Vredendal have been cut off from the rest of the country

More than 1 000 residents in Rawsonville in the Western Cape also have been displaced following floods that washed away about 340 homes in the Spooky Town informal settlement.
More than 1200 residents are sheltering at a local church amid the flooding in the province.
Towns that have been affected by the flooding include Citrusdal and Vredendal.
“Our teams will be going to Rawsonville as they have the highest number of people who are displaced. The number currently stands at 1064. On Monday, our teams will be heading there to deliver humanitarian assistance to them,” said Sablay.
“Three helicopters have been deployed to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to Vredendal, the town is cut off for the last week, and community members are in dire need of any humanitarian assistance.”
Sablay adds that water will be an issue in the area as there is only one functional borehole.
All the other boreholes were washed away by floods.
“Speaking to the deputy mayor on Saturday, he informed us that by Tuesday, the town will be running out of fuel as there is no access to bring anything into the town. They will be facing a water crisis as well, as there is one borehole that is functional at the moment, all the other boreholes got washed away.
“That one borehole is serving the whole town, but with the heavy rains predicted, we are worried that that borehole will be flooded as well.
“The organisation's trucks carrying supplies have been granted permission to use the Huguenot Tunnel, which had been closed to heavy-duty trucks following the floods.”
No deaths or injuries have been reported.
