City of Joburg warns of power constrains amid looming cold front

The City of Johannesburg has warned residents of a constrained electricity supply due to this weekend’s looming cold front.
Severe cold weather conditions are expected from Thursday until Sunday including strong winds, rain, and snowfall in other parts of the country.
The city's Department of Environment and Infrastructure Services has urged residents to use electricity sparingly.
"While our network is ready, and the teams are on standby to respond quickly to the power outage calls, we appeal to our customers to use power sparingly,” spokesperson Stan Itshegetseng said on Thursday.

"Eskom has also indicated that it is under tremendous pressure after losing generating capacity in two units at Tutuka and Medupi power stations, this will continue into the weekend.”
Itshegetseng said mini-substations, pole-mounted transformers, and cables exploded and burnt because overloading in several areas which include, Alexandra, Rosettenville, Rabie Ridge, and Freedom Park.
