This comes after the two officials, who are independent City Power contractors, attempted to solicit a R2000 bride from a resident in Auckland Park.

The City's Director of Group Forensic and Investigation Services (GFIS), Lucky Sindane, says the two officials approached the resident on Friday morning, informing him that his municipal account was in arrears and they would disconnect electricity supply to the property should he not give them R2000.

''They suggested that the resident go to Campus Square shopping centre to withdraw the money.''

The resident then informed the GFIS. This lead to a joint operation with JMPD to nab the two officials.

Mayor Herman Mashaba said: "Corruption has no place in this administration and we will work tirelessly, and in collaboration with institutions such as the Hawks, Saps, JMPD to ensure that it is eradicated and that residents of Johannesburg receive the quality services they deserve.''

The two officials will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
