City Power set to cut electricity to several defaulting Joburg hospitals
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
The electricity supply to several Johannesburg hospitals is set to be cut off on Thursday due to non-payment.

Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, Helen Joseph Hospital, Coronation Hospital and Baragwanath Hospital are among the health institutions that owe City Power over R41 million for electricity.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says defaulting customers and institutions are delaying the power utility’s ability to service its equipment and provide consistent services.
In the past several months, City Power has been on the revenue collection campaign to recoup R52 billion from defaulting customers.
Last month, Damelin college was disconnected for reportedly owing R2 million.
“City Power has for many months now been engaging with the provincial government over their debt book. The highest on the list is Charlotte Maxeke Joburg Hospital, with [the] Joburg hospital basically owing about R41 million and they are due for disconnection on Thursday, tomorrow.”
“The department needs to understand that at almost R10 billion in the red, City Power revenue book finds itself in critical but stable situation and really needs the revenue to stay afloat and be able to basically conduct maintenance on our infrastructure”.
The Department of Health in Gauteng could not be reached for comment.
