City Power's security services were prompted to investigate following a tip-off.

A case of possession of stolen property has been opened against one of the utility's contractors after it was found that the RMUs had been unlawfully stored at the property belonging to someone they knew.

This was in breach of the protocols directing the handling and storage of valuable municipal assets.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says the stolen RMUs are being logged under SAP 299 and are expected to be returned to their rightful place at City Power’s Reuven Head Office by Thursday morning.

"The suspect remains at large, but law enforcement is intensifying efforts to track them down, with further charges anticipated as the investigation progresses. City Power strongly condemns these criminal acts and reaffirms its commitment to securing the city’s infrastructure. The company is working closely with law enforcement to ensure that those responsible for this theft are held accountable."

City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava stressed that they will leave no stone unturned in our efforts to prevent such crimes and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

"We are not ruling out the involvement of this contractor alone but are also focusing on other contractors. We'll also be looking internally in terms of the department responsible for the dispatch of such essential equipment. Our priority remains to protect the critical services that power our city, especially during this vital period."
