City of Tshwane finances need urgent attention - Williams
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The finances of the City of Tshwane are in dire strain and need urgent attention, says mayor Randall Williams.
The mayor put the blame squarely on the administrators, who took over the administration of the city from the Democratic Alliance (DA) in 2020.
The courts later overturned the decision.
Williams adds stabilization of the city was further complicated of course by the broader challenges posed by Covid-19.
"I think you would all agree with me that six months is not a great deal of time," says Williams.
"Thus, in order to turn around the city we had to focus our attention on core deliverables.
"We found a massive budget deficit of over R4 billion in the city at the end of June last year.
"This deficit continued as when we took office in November 2020 the budget for the new financial year was already R2 billion in deficit."
Williams adds the deficit continued as the DA took office in November 2020.
He explains the budget for the new financial year was already R2 billion in deficit.
"This was due to the administrator’s unfunded budget. Collection levels had dropped to as low as 75% in some months when the administrators were in office," he says.
