City of Tshwane still battling to switch lights on in Pretoria East
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The City of Tshwane has still not managed to switch the lights on in all the suburbs of Pretoria East as it continues to battle with repairs at the Wapadrand substation.
The substation caught fire and exploded on Saturday.
The affected areas include Faerie Glen, Zwavelpoort, Lombardy, Wapadrand, Valley Farm, Silver Lakes, Tierpoort, Koedoeberg, and Donkerhoek.
Tshwane Mayor had earlier vowed that power will be restored before the end of Thursday, but the city's MMC for Utility Services Phillip Nel says more work needs to be done.
"During the process of bringing the new cables into the substation, we discovered we would need to do additional trenching due to complications with the existing cable infrastructure.
“Our teams opened the road which, despite creating a delay, has ended up assisting as we were able to identify two further cables under the road that needed repairs. Work is proceeding to fix all the affected cables.”
Nel says all electricity should be restored by Friday afternoon.
“Considering the scope of the additional work that is required, the new estimate for work completion is 16:00 on Friday for having all users connected
“The team are going to continue working around the clock trying their best to finish the work earlier.”
