Clean-up operations underway following Pomona fire
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The MMC for Human Settlements in Ekurhuleni Lesiba Mpya says the city has started clearing up the remains after a fire destroyed over two hundred shacks in Pomona informal settlement in Kempton Park on Monday evening.
Mpya says they will soon start with the reconstruction of the shacks to accommodate the displaced families.
Close to two hundred and fifty shacks were destroyed after a fire ripped through the informal settlement, leaving close to 900 residents displaced.
Although no fatalities or injuries were reported.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi said the fire was allegedly caused by an unguarded gas stove that exploded.
Mpya says the department has also managed to document over 700 people.
He adds that the biggest challenge is relocating them to places of safety as they fear they will not be allowed back to Pomona.
