‘Clear guidelines’ needed on integrity commission findings, warns ANC in KZN

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal wants the party’s national executive committee (NEC) to draw up clear guidelines on how to deal with recommendations made by its integrity commission.

The party briefed the media on Thursday on the outcomes of its provincial executive committee (PEC).

Provincial secretary-general Mdumiseni Ntuli says the issue of members stepping aside from their positions is still not consistent.

“For example, the integrity commission may make a ruling on the behaviour of a comrade who is not in any way charged or accused of anything that has to do with impropriety of the law or in terms of how the state works.

“It appears that there is an inconsistency in relation to how the integrity commission operates. That is primarily why the provincial executive committee has been insisting that unless there is a framework or guidelines adopted by the national executive committee, we are going to have a crisis in terms of our implementing the resolution of conference.

“Because the national integrity commission makes findings in one way, while the provincial integrity makes findings of almost similar cases but in a different way.  This has to be clarified at the national level.”

Earlier this week, the PEC in KZN ruled that former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede could return to her position in the provincial legislature.

The national integrity commission, meanwhile, has asked secretary-general Ace Magashule to step aside from his position until the completion of the corruption case against him.
