Cold weather to persist, no snow expected in Gauteng

The South African Weather Service expects the cold weather in Gauteng and central parts of the country to persist until at least Thursday.

National forecaster Phumza Masizana says scattered showers and rain are also expected to over the eastern provinces on Tuesday.

"It is currently raining today over the eastern areas of the North West Province, as well as the northern parts of Gauteng - so the City of Tshwane slowly moving into City of Johannesburg and Ekuruleni later this morning.

 

"We expect those conditions to persist throughout the day into the evening.”

 

She says there is a 60% chance of showers in Mpumalanga from Wednesday and temperatures are expected to drop significantly.

 

Masizana says while they do not expect any snow in Gauteng, some sleet could fall.

 

"We are not expecting any snowfall in Gauteng today, however, we are expecting some sleet -which is rain that could potentially turn into ice once it hits the surface- that's mostly over the southern areas of the Gauteng province.

 

"Now tomorrow, due to the significant temperature in Mpumalanga, snowfall is possible although we are still monitoring it at this stage."
