Comair grounding puts airline’s future in peril, warns expert

Aviation expert Joachim Vermooten believes the decision to ground Comair planes is likely to have a dramatic impact on the future of the airline.
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) suspended Comair’s operator's licence on Sunday due to a series of mid-air emergencies.
Comair operates budget airline Kulula and a local British Airways franchise.
Vermooten says the suspension will affect the future of the airline, which is already under business rescue.
“The suspension will have dramatic impacts on Comair, not only will it be losing revenues or passengers that it can’t operate, but it has committed to operate certain services and incurred certain costs for those services.
"The uncertainty of resumption services would remain behind and that affect its position on the market and its market attractiveness which is based on the reliability of flights.
"So, we really hope the Civil Aviation Authority will carefully consider the matter and that the department should review the matter in terms of the previous judgement of the previous civil aviation committee,” says Vermooten.
