He also vowed to work closely with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) to ensure safety for commuters and an increased level of comfort in new trains.

Ramaphosa was speaking at the unveiling of two new trains at Cape Town station on Tuesday.

The president says he's impressed with the quality of trains manufactured in the country.

"This for me is really a joyous moment. Joyous moment because this is like maybe the third interface I'm having in just a few months with our rail transportation facilities. The first time was when I went to the factory that is making these trains and I was immensely impressed; hugely impressed to see how we are now making trains in South Africa and that we are also looking forward to making trains for the continent."

Last month Ramaphosa was stuck on a train in Pretoria for more than three hours during an ANC election blitz.

"This is the best system for transporting people that we have i our country and I prove that to myself because when I was on the train in Soshanguve, ordinary people told me that they love using the train only if the train would arrive on time. They love it because it is the cheapest form of transport and should really be the safest form of transport," says Ramaphosa.

Before cutting the ribbon, Ramaphosa added that these new trains made him "a happy president".
