Communication committee approves SABC board candidates

Parliament’s communications portfolio committee on Thursday recommended eight names to fill the vacancies on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board.

The committee’s chairperson Hlengiwe Mkhize says the deliberation wasn’t without objections from opposition parties.
"We deliberated on the shortlisted names, the people we interviewed, and the committee then of course couldn’t agree on all the names but at least ultimately we agreed to put forward the eight names to the National Assembly."

The candidates are: Advocate Motshedi Lekalakala, Mamoduphi Mohlala-Mulaudzi, Bernedette Muthien, Saths Cooper, David Maimela, Jasmina Patel, Mary Papayya, and Marcia Socikwa.
"The next stage is for Parliament to look at each and every name, to have a discussion and then from there it will be passed on to the president’s office who will ultimately have to appoint board members," Mkhize says, adding that the candidates will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience if appointed.
"These people have a good nice of skills. Others are from the sector, telecoms and producing but others bringing good experience from other spheres."
