Community activist Pamela Mabini murdered in Gqeberha
Devasted family and friends are mourning the death of well-known Gqeberha human rights and anti-crime activist, Pamela Mabini who was shot and killed in Kwazakhele on Friday.
The 46-year-old was found inside her white Chevrolet bakkie with multiple gunshot wounds.
The bakkie had been parked next to the side of Mabini's family home in Tshauka Street.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said police responded to a complaint of a shooting in Tshauka Street at around 10:45 am.
While police are still searching for the suspects involved in the murder, Mabini's family said the reality of what had happened had not yet sunken in.
During a visit to Mabini's home on Friday, her mother's heartwrenching cries could be heard from inside the house.
A window just above the spot where her vehicle was parked, was still shattered where bullets had seemingly struck.
Mabini's cousin, Luzuko Gaxamba, who spoke on behalf of the family, said they were devastated.
"It's not easy to lose a member of the family, especially in this way.
"Pam was also the breadwinner of the family," he said.
Gaxamba acknowledged Mabini's role in assisting destitute members of society through her non-profit organization, the Maro Foundation.
She assisted abandoned children by providing them with food, shelter, and other supplies.
Mabini was also a fierce activist in the fight against Gender-based violence (GBV).
During the numerous court appearances of Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso and his co-accused, she lent support to his alleged victims.
Mabini has been quoted as saying that her tireless efforts to help others were "sparked by love".
Gaxamba said funeral arrangements will be communicated.
