Community protest in the south of Joburg
Updated | By MornéJK
Community members of Lenasia, south of Johannesburg are protesting over land this morning.
Residents want to occupy and build houses on an open piece of land in the area, but authorities are preventing them from building any structures.
According to the Johannesburg Metro Police's Wayne Minnaar the situation remains tense.
"It is tense along the K43 because protesters places rocks and burning tyres on the road," Minnaar says.
He adds that discussions between community members and representatives of the City of Joburg are underway and that there have been no injuries or arrests.
"Motorists must please avoid the area and use the Golden Highway as alternative," Minnaar says.
The latest protest over land comes as the debate over the issue intensifies within the ANC.
In a recent interview with Jacaranda FM News, the African National Congress (ANC) Treasurer General Zweli Mkhize said expropriation without compensation, as advocated by President Jacob Zuma, is not ANC policy.
"The process of the expropriation of land is one that must still be negotiated. The debate is going to be opened and we will look at the issue again as we head to the ANC's policy conference," he said.
