Concern over safety of prosecutor in asbestos case
Updated | By OFM
Concerns are mounting over the safety of the prosecutor in the controversial asbestos audit case after his home was broken into last week.
Advocate Johan de Nysschen confirmed reports that his Bloemfontein home was burgled by unknown suspects on Saturday.
De Nysschen, who was accompanied by bodyguards at the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Friday, told OFM News that a case had been opened with police and an investigation into the incident is underway.
This isn’t the first time concerns have been raised by authorities over De Nysschen’s safety.
On Monday, the advocate will return to the Free State High Court where he is the prosecutor in another headline-grabbing criminal case - the murder trial of Bloemfontein businessman Louis Siemens.
It was in that murder trial in 2019 that concerns around De Nysschen’s safety were first raised and he was assigned bodyguards.
“No case of burglary has been reported under De Nysschen’s name per se but a case of housebreaking and theft was opened at the Park Road Police Station last week Saturday under a female complainant’s name - presumably his wife's,” said Free State police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele.
