Concern at state of government buildings after blaze

Questions are being asked about the state of the provincial government building after it was engulfed in flames on Wednesday.

Joburg fire
The building houses various government departments, including health, human settlements and local government. The Democratic Alliance's (DA) Jack Bloom says staff have previously complained about the safety of the building but their cries fell on death ears. "The Gauteng health department should have been sensitive to the complaints of their staff and made sure this was a safe building," says Bloom. He has called for a complete investigation into the cause of the fire.

National Health Education & Allied Workers Union (Nehawu) says its members have been raising concerns over the safety of the building since 2014.

The union's Gauteng chairperson, Tshepo Mokheranya, says in 2014 the organisations' members demonstrated over the safety of the building.

"Instead of management addressing those concerns at the time, they restored to suspending our shop stewards in this department of health," says Mokheranya.

One firefighter died when he slipped on the edge of the building.
