ConCourt dismisses Electoral Amendment Act application by BOSA, Rivonia Circle
Updated | By Emile Pienaar
The Constitutional Court has dismissed an application from non-profit organisation Rivonia Circle and Mmusi Maimane's Build One South Africa party to challenge the Electoral Amendment Act.
The non-profit organisation and BOSA approached the apex court in December last year.
They challenged the submission of candidate lists and signature requirements for parties not represented in the National Assembly.
This comes as millions of eligible South Africans will be heading to the polls on 29 May.
This means political parties will have to meet 15% of the quota for a specific region as obtained in the last election.
Maimane believes the rules for this year's general elections favour political parties that are already represented in Parliament.
"Obviously, like any South African, we are deeply concerned about the way the rules have been made to suit parties that are represented in Parliament.
“The IEC has dragged its feet on issues that speak to signature provisions, issues that we have taken to the Constitutional Court on, and now the ConCourt is saying they will only hear those issues after the election.”
