Consumer Commission warns of harsh penalties for hiking of post-unrest food prices

The National Consumer Commission has called on South Africans to report any excessive hiking of prices on essential goods.
The consumer watchdog was reacting to fears that some retailers might increase prices amid the shortages of certain products in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.
"We have seen over the past few days where consumers were complaining about prices of bread, eggs, cooking oil, and mealie meal,” says the commission's spokesperson Phetho Ntaba.
"But what they have done is that they are complaining more on social media platforms, and we encourage consumers to use the very same energy to the Consumer Commission."
The commission has warned suppliers against excessive pricing.
"This is not the time to make a profit especially to the detriment of consumers and the country is still on the national disaster.
'You are not allowed, you are prohibited under regulation 350 read with section 40 and 48, you are prohibited for increasing or inflating your prices in an unfair manner," adds Ntaba.
