Consumers urged to return Similac Alimentum 400G infant formula

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has urged consumers in South Africa to take note of a worldwide recall of Similac Alimentum 400G infant formula and immediately discontinue use.

These products can be returned to the shop where it was purchased for a full refund.
This comes after the manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories-Nutrition, informed the Commission of a voluntary recall following a global recall as announced by the supplier.
The product was manufactured between March 2021 and May 2021 at the plant in Michigan in the United States of America and was exported to South Africa and other countries.
Acting Commissioner, Thezi Mabuza says the recall follows complaints from consumers in the US that their babies showed some symptoms after they were fed the formula milk.
“Internal tests by the supplier confirmed the presence of both Cronobacter and Salmonella Microoganisms in the product.
Though according to Abbott Laboratories, only four cases were reported in the USA, the presence of Cronobacter and Salmonella in an infant formula is a cause for concern,” says Mabuza.
So far, there has been no cases reported in South Africa; however, Mabuza urges consumers not to feed their infants the product.
“Consumers are urged to look for the following product description to determine whether the products form part of the recall. Product Name Similac Alimentum 400g Infant Formula, Batch Number 27938z26 and 29284Z26 , Manufacturing date March 2021 and May 2021, Exp date 01 April 2023 and 01 June 2023.”
