Cop dies during escape attempt
A police officer from Limpopo died and a suspect was left in a critical condition after a scuffle broke out in the police vehicle in which the suspect was being taken to court in Pretoria.
Gauteng Community Safety spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo said the Modimolle detective was transporting the suspect on the N1 south highway to Pretoria for a court appearance on Thursday when the incident occurred.
“The suspect was handcuffed when he suddenly grabbed the officer on the neck and choked him.”
Nxumalo said witnesses saw the vehicle moving from left to right and the two suddenly fell out of the vehicle.
The vehicle rode over the officer, decapitating him, and critically injuring the suspect, she said.
The suspect was currently in hospital under police supervision and will be facing multiple charges if he recovers. - ANA
