Warrant officer Steven Britz, 44, was killed while on duty on Wednesday night at around 10.30pm, said Lt-Col Andrè Traut.

He was shot by unknown assailants and firearms were stolen, he said.

"The unknown suspects who are yet to be arrested fled the scene with five official firearms, which were removed from the gun safe," he said.

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Arno Lamoer said the police would do everything in their power to arrest those responsible for Britz's murder.

"These criminals cannot be allowed to walk free and will have to be apprehended as a matter of high priority," he said.

Britz served the SA Police Service for 22 years, and is survived by his wife and two sons, aged 11 and 19.
