The ANC government’s orgy of self congratulation on this year’s matricresults shows the level of desperation for good news by the currentleadership, says Congress of the People (COPE) President and Parliamentary leader Mosiuoa Lekota.

Lekota says we should be celebrating the quality of education we produce rather than how many students we push through to obtain acertificate that is not worth the paper it’s written on. He says many of the students who have supposedly “passed” matric will battle to find employment or gain admission to a tertiary institution.

“Let us not forget about the hundreds of pupils who have dropped out and did not sit for the grade 12 exams. When you look into all these issues, it is clear that the ANC-led government should not be trusted with the education of our children,” says Lekota. “South Africa’s productivity has steadily declined in the past few years and this is directly attributable to the quality of education that we are offering to our children.

The level of youth unemployment is an Arab Spring waiting to happen, another by-product of a dismal education system,” says Mr Lekota. “We have leaders who are way out of their depth and have absolutely no qualms about celebrating mediocrity,” added Lekota.
