Cope: Ramaphosa must act to ensure safety for Fort Hare VC
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Congress of the People (Cope) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to beef up security around the vice-chancellor and principle of Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape.
Professor Sakhele Buhlungu's bodyguard Mboneli Vesele was killed when shots were fired at Buhlungu's car outside his official residence at the Alice campus on Friday night.
The professor was not harmed in the shooting and has since been taken to a safe location.
Buhlungu's assassination attempts are believed to be related to the corruption he uncovered at the university.
Cope spokesperson Dennis Bloem says Ramaphosa cannot only make statements about the protection of whistleblowers.
"President Ramaphosa must listen to the cries of Prof Buhlungu, it is a cry for help to save his life and not his life alone but the lives of colleagues who are fighting against corruption. How many more whistleblowers must be killed before this government can protect them? We demand the immediate arrest of the murderers.
"It is very clear that nobody in this country is safe anymore. South Africa has become a lawless society where criminals are in control. We call on Ramaphosa to stop with his empty promises and arrest the criminals and restore law and order again."
Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has called on Police Minister Bheki Cele to ensure the swift investigation and arrest of the assailants.
