Corporates fail to invest in employee welfare: Mathunjwa
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
There is an apparent failure by corporates is to invest in the welfare of their employees and the mining communities.
This according to the president of mining union AMCU, Joseph Mathunjwa, who addressed the annual Serious Social Investing (SSI) Conference on Monday.
Mathunjwa addressed conscious capitalism, the power of management and union partnership to overcome complex CSI (Corporate Social Investment) environments
Mathunjwa said there was a need for stiffer penalties as well as jail time for companies and managers who neglected their workers.
He was referring to the Marikana massacre and the recent Lily Mine tragedy.
"The Lily Mine tragedy hasn't gotten much attention because the three workers still underground are just AMCU members. They are not the sons and daughters of ministers and people in high profile positions," he said.
