It follows a shooting at a tavern in Ermelo at the weekend.

Police say the 27-year-old man is facing charges of attempted murder and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mtsholi Bhembe, says the suspect was arrested at a tavern on Sunday morning.

"The police were patrolling just after midnight. They heard a gunshot as they were driving towards a tavern. They found a man pointing his firearm towards some vehicles, but when he saw police he got into his vehicle and tried to flee," Bhembe explains.

He says the man drove recklessly in an attempt to flee and ended up crashing into a pole.

Police were later informed that a 33-year old man had been hospitalised after sustaining gunshot wounds during the ordeal.

"The man who was in hospital informed the police that he was shot at the same tavern. The suspect allegedly damaged the victim's side mirror as he was parking. When the victim confronted the suspect he was rude to him and fired two shots at the suspect," Bhembe adds.

He has confirmed that the firearm used to commit the crime was the suspect's personal pistol.

The suspect is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
