Correctional Services confirms detention of Libyans in White River

The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed the admission of 91 Libyan nationals who were arrested in White River.
Ninety-five suspects were arrested following the discovery of a suspected secret military training camp near the Mpumalanga town last week.
The group made their first court appearance on Monday on charges of contravention of the Immigration Act.
The case was postponed until August 5 due to the unavailability of an Arabic court interpreter.
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said the other four suspects are being kept at a police station due to outstanding information.
"The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, highlighted that inmate admissions were conducted in strict accordance with established procedures and protocols as per Section 6 of the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998.
"Like all newly admitted detainees, they will undergo health screening, security assessment, and orientation programmes to acquaint them with their rights and facility rules.”
Last week, the Home Affairs Department confirmed it had revoked the group’s visas, as they are undocumented.
Police swooped on the camp after Masoyi residents reportedly complained about a spike in crime in the area.
The bust has raised questions about the efficiency of police intelligence and immigration processes in South Africa.
