‘Corrupt’ Tshwane licensing officials arrested, suspended

The City of Tshwane says various officials implicated in fraud and corruption at licencing departments have been arrested or suspended.

In a statement on Tuesday, the city said it received several tip-offs from members of the public complaining about fraud and corruption at the city's licensing department.
Implicated employees in four cases at Akasia Licencing Centre, involving the issuing fraudulent licences, were served with suspension letters while two officials assigned to Rayton Licencing Centre were arrested.
The city’s MMC for Roads and Transport in Tshwane Katlego Mothebe says one of the challenges facing licencing centres is corruption, whether real or perceived.
"Other officials will be subjected to processes of law enforcement agencies and internal processes in line with the city’s disciplinary procedures. To make a visible difference, the Roads and Transport Department is working to restore high levels of service standards to fight fraud and corruption in collaboration with the Hawks and other law enforcement authorities.”
