Licence to retire: Gordhan renews driver's card himself
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Public Entreprises Minister Pravin Gordhan has renewed his drivers licence, days after announcing his retirement from active politics.
Gordhan visited the Eco Park traffic department in Centurion on Monday.
Last week, his department announced that the 74-year-old anti-apartheid activist would be retiring after the 29 May elections.
As a cabinet Minister, Gordhan does not have to drive himself around, as he is driven by his protectors.
But RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said Gordhan's willingness to do it himself shows confidence in the system.
"Its a welcome thing, to see senior government officials, using our facilities to renew their drivers licences, it gives confidence to other members of the public, who are also using the services, to see their leaders queuing together with them, Minister Gordhan is one of the many ministers that have used or services.
"This shows that RTMC does not visit ministers' houses to offer services, they make appointments on the online system like everyone else and they come to the premises to renew, even ministers in the Presidency and Labour have also done that before," he said.
