Cosas vows to take ‘padlocks and chains’ to lock schools across SA

The Congress of South African Students (Cosas) has vowed to shut down all private schools following the decision to close public schools as the country battles Covid-19.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced last week that all public schools would be closed for four weeks in August as the country approaches its Covid-19 peak.

Private schools have been given an option to continue teaching and learning during this period.

Cosas’ Bantu Joseph says the government is only perpetuating the country’s inequality gap.

“As Cosas we feel like we are the messiahs who will be able to stop inequality in South Africa.

“We’ve been on the ground. Comrades of Cosas are all over and going to shut down and today (Monday) I am located in the Western Cape.”

The decision to temporarily close public schools, but not their private counterparts, has led to stinging criticism from some sectors of society.

Cosas has now vowed to take “our very own padlocks and chains” to lock every school in South Africa.

“Our plan is to target more and more schools because we have learned that the management of Curro has been arrogantly saying they will continue operating and they have been operating since day one.

“We want to teach Curro a lesson that they are in South Africa operating in the education system of South Africa,” adds Joseph.
