Cosatu bemoans lack of discipline in ANC - ‘it has become worse’

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) is concerned about the lack of unity in the African National Congress (ANC) ahead of this year’s local government elections.

The federation’s Central Executive Committee briefed the media on Thursday.

"The CEC recognised that our revolution has reached a state of stagnation,” said the federation’s general-secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali.

“Since (the national conference at) Nasrec, the lack of discipline in the ANC has become worse with leaders and members showing disdain for the rules of the organisation. This makes a mockery of the Mangaung conference which declared this the decade of the cadre.

Ntshalintshali warned that its alliance partner is struggling to function as a united organisation.

“Since the Mangaung conference, we have seen more and more court interventions in political disputes. Political ineptitude and factionalism have created this dangerous reliance in courts."

He said the situation in the ANC raises concerns about the party’s ability to implement the resolutions adopted at Nasrec in 2017.

Ntshalintshali said on paper the Nasrec conference and the 2019 ANC manifesto promised economic policies based on decent work, a new industrial policy, and national health insurance among others, but progress has been disappointing.

He warned that workers are going to find it hard to support the ANC in the upcoming elections.
