Cosatu holds meeting over Zuma impeachment move
Updated | By ANA
A Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) resumed its extended political commission meeting to deliberate on plans by opposition parties to impeach President Jacob Zuma was underway on Tuesday, the trade union federation said.
“A statement will be released on the attempts to put a motion of impeachment against the sitting President of the Republic of South Africa by the opposition parties,” the organisation said.
Last week, the country’s biggest trade union federation said it welcomed the Constitutional Court judgement on the Nkadla debacle, and urged all concerned parties to implement the court’s ruling “without fail”.
“This court judgement is exceptionally significant for our growing democracy because it has also helped to shed some light on the contentious issue of the separation of powers. Going forward this should also help strengthen our democracy and assist the nation to navigate future challenges,” Cosatu said at the time.
Zuma has since apologised to the nation over the drawn out Nkandla saga. The ANC national working committee that met overnight in Cape Town closed ranks around Zuma and said it had accepted his apology ahead of a motion of impeachment in the National Assembly on Tuesday. The ruling party said it would take no political action against Zuma. - ANA
