Cosatu, Num to march over Lily Mine
Updated | By Olivia Phalaetsile
Cosatu and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) are planning to march to the Department of Mineral Resources
over unresolved Lily Mine issues.
Cosatu says it is disappointed that the workers have allegedly not been paid the money promised to them by Minister Mosebenzi Zwane.
Cosatu Spokesperson Sizwe Pamla said the families of the three trapped miners where promised R200 000, while injured workers where promised R50 000.
“The families and the injured miners have not yet received the money. We cannot allow the minister to make reckless promises and fail to fulfil them,” he said.
Pamla said the government has not yet responded to Cosatu’s call for a Commission of Inquiry into the incident.
“The federation remains adamant that it was the reckless conduct of the mine bosses that caused the accident,” he said.
Pamla said the failure of government to intervene makes a mockery of the ANC.
