Cosatu: Time has come for govt to act on Eskom

The troubled power utility is implementing stage 4 load shedding until at least the end of the week – some of the worst power cuts in the history of the country.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) says the time has come for government to play a more proactive role in resolving Eskom’s problems.
The troubled power utility is implementing stage 4 load shedding until at least the end of the week – some of the worst power cuts in the history of the country.
Cosatu spokesperson Sizwe Pamla says government needs to play a more proactive role.
“We would like to see much more political intervention from government. What we have heard so far is not satisfactory and we need a comprehensive investigation into all the deals and transactions that have been done before and current ones so that we can find out if people are making money out of load shedding.”
Pamla says there should be a closer look into the competency of management at the power stations level, instead of constantly removing the board or executive.
“Are we sure if removing CEO will work this time, the people at senior management level, decision-makers who run these power stations, who are involved in procurement have we shined a spotlight on those individuals?”
On Tuesday morning, affiliate National Union Mineworkers called on the Eskom board CEO Andre De Ruyter to resign.
In a statement, NUM acting general-secretary William Mabapa said unbundling of Eskom is presented as a panacea for all Eskom’s problems.
"The Eskom leadership presented a turnaround strategy that is not tailored to solve the load shedding problems that we are experiencing now. A turnaround strategy is supposed to have short-term, medium-term, and long-term solutions. The strategy presented by De Ruyter focused on unbundling Eskom and disposing of some of its assets.”
