Could Covid-19 masks soon be a thing of the past?

The Health Department has remained mum on reports that government could this week do away with the remaining Covid-19 regulations.

A government memo, which was leaked on social media, suggests that Health Minister Joe Phaahla wrote to provincial Health MECs on the possible dropping of masks in public spaces, the lifting of the ban on gatherings, and the removal of restrictions on travellers entering the country.

The latest data from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) shows the test positivity rate has declined to 4.1% on Monday.

However, the department’s spokesperson Foster Mohale has refused to confirm or deny the veracity of the memo.

"We heard about this letter, but no official announcement has been made yet on the regulations. I don't know if it is a fake letter or an authentic letter but we can confirm that the discussions on how to take the country forward in managing Covid-19 are concerned and are still continuing.

"Since the begging of the pandemic, we have been dealing with fake news and there are people who will use any other opportunity to confuse and frustrate the public on the Covi-19 pandemic."
