Couple attacked at Mpuma resort

A couple have been attacked with pangas while staying at a resort at Pienaar Dam in Middelberg, Mpumalanga, police said.

It was believed they were assaulted by a group of men that broke into their house on Friday morning, Col Leonard Hlathi said.
"I can confirm the crime did happen and Mpumalanga police are investigating the matter," he said.
"The couple were driven out the house by a substance that was lit and thrown into the house by the [suspects]. The smoke filled the house. It was
when the two went out the house for fresh air that they were attacked."
The attackers made off with cellphones and a purse and a search was launched.
Local Democratic Alliance spokesman Willie Venter said Deon van der Merwe and Katrien Fourie were attacked with pangas and a hammer after six men gained entry to their house at the resort.
"The couple were hospitalised and are still receiving treatment," he said in a statement.
Hlathi said the man and woman were badly injured but were in a stable condition.
