Court denies bail to 7 SANDF soldiers accused of smuggling

Seven
South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who were arrested on
charges of smuggling have been denied bail by the Makhado Magistrate’s Court in
Limpopo.

The group was arrested for allegedly assisting smuggling syndicates from South Africa to transport vehicles into Zimbabwe.
Hawks spokesperson Matimba Maluleke says the suspects were arrested in three different provinces.
“The suspects were arrested in the Free State, Northern Cape and North West last month. The seven soldiers who were arrested for assisting vehicle smuggling syndicates to smuggle stolen vehicles through the Limpopo River where they were deployed to guard the borderline fence.”
According to Maluleke, the case was held at Makhado Magistrate’s office as the Musina one was closed by labour inspectors because the building was not safe.
Maluleke says the bail of the accused has been successfully contested.
“Their bail was successfully opposed, we
advanced our reasons in court and it was decided that they remain in custody”
The case has been postponed to the 1 September.
